Do you just love the thought of having your own website, creating a large following and offering simple solutions to everyday problems? Would you love you start your own business in 2018? All while having fun and feeling a real sense of satisfaction? Not to mention the extra income you can be making that could lead to a full-time income. The possibilities are endless and the feeling of contribution you could feel just by helping others is like the cherry on top.
How many times have you tried to pursue your own business so far, but have lacked the focus and clarity to do what you need to do to achieve success? Have you ever felt that it was an impossible task getting started? It usually goes something like this;
You become motivated, you have complete focus and clarity, but then it dwindles over the next few weeks.
This is what it usually feels like when trying to start a business on your own. There is nobody to guide or mentor you to keep you
motivated or even to have somebody to ask those impossible questions.
Here you are going to find a process below to show you how you can start your own business in 2018. I will list the process step by step and show you what you need to do to get started and how to keep going.
Step 1 – Think Of A Topic You Would Like To Talk About
So the first thing you need to do to get started is to think of a topic that you are interested in talking about. This is what you will call your niche. Make it simple, make it relevant and keep it focused on one area. This is either going to be the easiest or the hardest part of the process.
When I first got started I was into so many different things that I didn’t know what I wanted to talk about.
Tip: If you have various subjects of interests jot them all down, you can easily turn these ideas into separate niche blogs down the line, but for now just pick one and let that be your focus for this website.
I love creating content about starting an online business as it is something I am passionate about but have found it very difficult to find the information I need to get started. Which means if I found it difficult then there are many others that feel the same.
If you are really struggling with figuring out your subject area then download my FREE Find Your Passion workbook to help you to define what your passion is.
Step 2 – Create Your Ideal Customer Avatar
Once you have figured out what you would like to create your content on, you must have your ideal customer in mind. The easiest way to do this is to create a customer avatar.
Download my FREE Customer Avatar workbook to help you to define who your audience is. If you are struggling with defining your audience then use yourself as your customer avatar for now. You will begin by targeting people just like yourself, but eventually, you will be able to target an audience that you truly believe can benefit from what you have to offer.
Much of this information will be used when creating content for your website, but for now just having an idea of who your customer is as this will help you to map out your website and content.
Step 3 – Start Creating Your Fast Loading Website
Now that the hard part is over, the technical aspects are much easier than you might think. It can be massively daunting thinking about creating an entire website, but be assured that you have all the steps laid out in front of you to help you follow step-by-step.
Where There’s A Will There’s A Way
Before I go any further, in the name of full transparency please note that the following steps will contain affiliate links. If clicked on and you decide to purchase the product please note I will receive a commission for the sale at no extra cost to you.
Tip: Being transparent about your affiliate links is not only required for compliant reasons, but it also creates trust with your reader.
3.1 Think of a business name
When building your website the first thing you want to do is to think of a business name. This is so you can purchase a domain. You may find that your preferred name is not available. If you are having trouble finding a name then just use your name for now. You will find that the more content and engagement you have with your audience, the easier it will become to find a suitable name for your website.
The cheapest website I have found for buying domain names is Namecheap. In fact, there are tons of websites out there offering domains and any of them will do. But why spend more on a domain when you don’t have to? Plus their customer service is fantastic.
To get started go to www.Namecheap.com or simply type in your preferred domain name in the search option below. Use your business name and select search, where you will then purchase your domain.
Find a domain starting at $0.48

3.2 Buy Hosting
Now, this is a biggie! I have spent a lot of money on hosting in the past only for my website to be painfully slow. Having a fast loading website is super super important because most people will go elsewhere when your website does not load fast enough.
This is the number one way to lose a potential customer!
It is also tempting to use the all-in-one platform such as Wix but I have also found the hosting on these sites to be super slow. I wholeheartedly recommend using SiteGround to host your website as not only have I found them to be the cheapest hosting company but my website loads way faster than it has ever done.
Their customer service is second to none and they will go above and beyond to set you up. I moved my hosting from another company to SiteGround and they were with me step by step helping me with even the smallest of queries. So for that reason I absolutely recommend them.
Many bloggers tend to recommend Bluehost, as their affiliate commissions are higher than SiteGround, however for me personally I wanted to ensure that my website loads as fast as possible so for this reason I only recommend SiteGround.
There are 3 different plans that you can get started with depending on the number of websites you want to create. I personally purchased the GrowBig plan as I wanted the option of a second website. However choose the plan that best suits your needs now and if you need to upgrade at a later date then you can.
The StartUp plan starts at just £2.95 or $3.95 US, which you will pay for annually rather than monthly.
You can also purchase your domain through SiteGround to save you the hassle of working with multiple providers if you choose to, however, this is totally up to you. You will also need an SSL certificate which you should get for FREE with your domain provider for one year.
SSL is essential for protecting your website, even if it doesn’t handle sensitive information like credit cards. It provides privacy, critical security and data integrity for both yourself and your users’ personal information. If you do not have one then do not worry about it at this stage. Building your content is far more important.
Here are some more reasons why you should start your blog with SiteGround & WordPress:
SiteGround has been voted the #1 WordPress host
All plans come included with managed WordPress hosting
Offers free SSL certificate (Let’s Encrypt)
SiteGround is recommended by WordPress, Joomla and Drupal
Also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee
Step 4 – Start Building Your Website
Once you have purchased your hosting plan you can now install WordPress. The best thing about Siteground is that they will install WordPress for you. Go to ahead and contact their customer service team.
If you have purchased a domain through Siteground they will automatically direct your domain to your new WordPress site. If you purchased your domain from Namecheap or anywhere else then you will need to access your domain account and ensure the domain is pointing to your new hosting provider.
If in doubt, please contact their customer service team who will help you to do this part.
Step 4.1 – Download A Theme
At this point, you are pretty much ready to download a free theme. However, the only problem with a free theme is the lack of customer service if and when you run into problems. I have had my fair share of themes in the past and I have always found the paid themes to be much better quality and the customer service is there if you need it.
For the theme on this website I have purchased through StudioPress, however, all their themes require the Genesis Framework. If you purchase a theme only, then without the Genesis Framework your website will not work.
If I had to describe what the Genesis Framework is, it is best described as the engine of a car whilst the theme is the body. The Genesis Framework is optimized for SEO and each time that WordPress update their platform, the Genesis Framework is optimized to ensure there are no glitches ready and waiting for you.
Step 4.2 – Starting Creating Your Content
This is the most crucial step as you must have content that people are looking for. Using the customer avatar workbook, you should know who your audience in and what they are looking for.
Start creating blog posts that your audience will love to read. If you prefer video then start creating video’s that your audience will love. I personally did a 90 Day Video Challenge to help me become more comfortable on video. But all it really takes is practice. Starting your own business in this area means you must put as much effort as you would in your full-time job when learning a new skill.
Create pretty graphics through Canva or PicMonkey. Find stock free photos from Unsplash to use in your blog posts. Use the Yoast plugin to help you write better blog posts that are SEO optimized. But your focus at this point is to create as much amazing content as possible. And don’t quit.
